I recently had the chance to visit the Toji Garakuta-ichi, an antique market held on the first Sunday of every month within the grounds of the historic Toji Temple—a UNESCO World Heritage site.
A Treasure Trove of History
This market is a paradise for lovers of vintage goods. As I walked through the stalls, I found an incredible variety of items that seemed to transcend time:
-
Traditional Ceramics and pottery.
-
Vintage Tools and curiosities.
-
Showa-era Retro Goods that bring back a sense of nostalgia.
With the cherry blossoms just beginning to bloom, the temple grounds were filled with a vibrant energy, drawing a large crowd of visitors from the early morning hours.
The Joy of the Hunt
The real highlight of the market is the experience itself—wandering from stall to stall, eyes peeled for that one-of-a-kind "find." There is something truly special about searching for treasures amidst the calm, refined atmosphere that only Kyoto can provide.

Plan Your Visit
If you happen to be in Kyoto on the first Sunday of the month, I highly recommend stopping by.
-
Time Needed: You can comfortably explore the entire market in about two hours.
-
Pro Tip: Arrive early! By starting your morning here, you can beat the largest crowds and still have plenty of time to enjoy the rest of your day in the city.
It’s a perfect way to experience a local side of Kyoto and perhaps bring home a piece of history.
